[The scene opens up to an excited Bobby Benson as he moves through one of the hallways of the Microsoft Theater. The wily manager looks to be a man on a mission, and it doesn’t take him long to find his target. Indi Rhyder signs a young fans program with a sweet smile, tossling the kids hair as the parents lead him away. No sooner does she turn to continue on in the direction that she had been going does Benson step right in her way.]
BOBBY BENSON
Indi, Baby! Long time, no see! Have you given any thought to that conversation we had at Guerrilla Warfare? I mean, I could be wrong, but in my humble opinion you had a GREAT night at that show. You went in at number three and lasted all the way to the end until that unfortunate business with Dakota Smith, but hey! Baby! Let me tell you, it was a hell of a run!
[Benson excitedly moves around, the camera having to swing in order to keep up with him. Indi watches the animated man as he comes to a stop on the other side of her.]
BOBBY BENSON
But seriously, baby, just think about it. Who was it that got you pumped up for that match? Who talked to you earlier in the night and gave you what you yourself said was a great pep-talk? Uncle Bobby, that’s who! Now whaddaya say? Are you ready to sign...of course you are...here’s a pen.
[Much like last time, a pen is thrust into Rhyder’s hand and like a magic trick a stack of papers stapled together appear in Benson’s hands and is pressed up against the wall for Indi to sign. Indi stared at the pen again in wonderment and then gives Bobby a serious look.]
Indi Rhyder: Mr. Benson, My dude, I have to admit that our talk before the big match was helpful, but I still don’t know if we’d make good business together. After all….
[Before Indi could finish her sentence, Bobby notices something past the camera that captures his attention. He holds up a finger to pause Indi, and leans in close.]
BOBBY BENSON
Great talk, Indi! Now hold that thought…
[Benson leaves the Galactic Princess watching after him wide eyed as the camera swings around to find out what now had his attention. Benson rushes over to interrupt the gate of one Willie Pete as he makes his way towards guerrilla position.]
BOBBY BENSON
Pete, Baby! It’s an honor to meet you! I’m a huge fan of your work and I hear you’re taking on Wendy Wynne tonight in the opener. Let me just say, I think you’ve got this in the bag, but you can never be too sure in a place like this. Is anyone looking over your financials, making sure you get the most bucks for your talents? If not...let me just say...The Benson Family is always looking to recruit, and I would be more than happy to help you navigate these troubling waters…
[Bensons gives Willie a huge shit eating grin, extending his hand as if a handshake is all he needs to seal the deal. You would think Benson was still talking, if all you saw was Willie’s expression. Finally, after some time of nodding energetically, Willie breaks the increasingly awkward silence with…]
WILLIE PETE
First, it’s an honor to meet you too! Your hair is outstanding! Second, I’ve never had someone say that much stuff to me with that level of energy before, like, in my whole life! And third, I don’t have ‘financials’ yet. I should get some. You’re saying you’d help me do that?!
[Dollar signs in his eyes, the hand that was extended now finds itself around Willie’s shoulders. He excitedly waves his hands in front of them, as if saying to Pete, ‘just picture it.’]
BOBBY BENSON
Willie, there’s a whole world out there called professional wrestling, and Union Battleground, while being a premiere part of it, is just a small island in a sea of opportunity. What I’m offering is stardom, fame, money, and championships! I’m telling you, Baby! Join the Benson Family, and all your dreams can come true!
[Willie’s picturing it. Vividly. He sees it all. But somewhere between ‘stardom’ and ‘championships’, Willie frowns. He looks at Bobby, he sees his confidence, his amazing hair, and most of all, he sees a stability that he hasn’t seen in a long time. Wilie makes his mind up with little to no information and a willingness to blindly sign a contract that would lead to his destruction. See also: His current wireless plan.]
WILLIE PETE
Well Bobby, If I can even get half of that, or at least the money part, I’ll sign up and join your ‘family’! It just so happens that I lost my shirt on a few bets recently and I’m quietly dying inside, so I need money. I mean, no rush or anything, but seriously: I’ll jump off a building into a pit of crocodiles while I’m buck naked and covered in bbq sauce if it means I get some money!
[Willie lets out a laugh.]
WILLIE PETE
Seriously, I bury it deep and don’t broadcast it, but I constantly feel doomed!
[More laughing. Bobby now looks at Willie in a new light, a moment of slight hesitation creeping up his spine. But then he remembers all those who came before him. Terry Hero. Kris Angel. The American Steam, Husky Road. They were all eccentric, and every single one of them was broke before he found them. With a grin, Bobby takes the contract that had Indi’s name on it, crossed it out, and replaced it with Willie Pete’s.]
BOBBY BENSON
I like your enthusiasm! Let’s get this done!
[Bobby produces the magic pen, and hands it over to what seems like a willing Pete. Willing Willie Pete was also Willie’s nickname when he was a gigolo, but that’s a long drawn out story that can be saved for another time, or preferably, never at all. Willie takes the pen, and ignores the hastily crossed out ‘Indi Rhyder’ and signs his life away. Hopefully Willie’s name would one day carry the same weight as Husky Road.]
WILLIE PETE
Alright! Now we’re family! We have to hug!
[The big hug brings Bobby up off of his feet for a moment, but he manages not to struggle too much. Willie sets Bobby down and keeps his hands on his shoulders for a moment, long enough to nod approvingly. Now they’re standing awkwardly close to eachother.]
BOBBY BENSON
Well...alright then! We’re going to make a great team! It’s going to be awesome, and your first test comes tonight against Wendy Wynne. Go out there and maim her, destroy her, kill her...eh...whatever. Just win, and I’ll be there to mop up that conquest and turn it into gold for your future...but...uh…right now, I have to get back to my other client, James. He’s got the main event tonight...You understand, don’t you sport?
WILLIE PETE
Oh of course! Yeah, gotta go take care of business. I guess that makes James my brother now. I wonder if he’ll teach me line dancing?
[Willie trails off as Bobby looks for the right time to make his exit.]
WILLIE PETE
Whelp! Seeya later!
[And just like that, Willie Pete was now managed by Bobby Benson, who quickly took his signed contracted and exited the scene to leave Pete to contemplate his navel.]
BOBBY BENSON
