[The scene opens to a dark room somewhere in the Plaza De Toros Calafia with a bright spotlight at its center. Sitting there on a stool, bathed in the effervescent glow is ‘Country Fine’ James Radford. He’s already dressed for his match, which is just moments away, but lying across his lap is a ’45 Grand Daddy Martin guitar with a mahogany neck. He looks up under the brim of his trademark Stetson hat and removes the pick that is clinched beneath his teeth before choking up on the guitar. He strums out the opening notes of “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash. The famous clap that accompanies the song also starts, and out from behind James steps Bobby Benson, keeping the rhythm of the song with his hands. In a clear deep voice James begins to sing.]
♫♫♫
JAMES RADFORD
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down
♫♫♫
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight Rider…..
[James pauses and looks to Bobby, who nods while continuing to clap. James picks back up the song, breaking in where he left off.]
JAMES RADFORD
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that Indi Rhyder
Tel the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down
♫♫♫
Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
my head’s been wet with the midnight dew
I’ve been down on bended knee
Talkin’ to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in a voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel’s feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, “JAMES GO DO MY WILL!”
[James paused the song once more, and this time Bobby’s clapping ceases as well. The wily manager grins mischievously at the camera as James stares hard into the lens, cold blue eyes glinting with resolve. This time when he recites the lyrics, it is spoken in a grave voice.]
JAMES RADFORD
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that Indi Rhyder
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell her that God’s going to cut her down.
[James is nearly shaking with intensity as he leans in close, whispering the last.]
JAMES RADFORD
Tell her that I’m going to cut her down.
[With that James slips off the stool and walks out of frame, leaving Bobby Benson to cackle while rubbing his hands together just as the scene fades back to ringside.]
